Hey there, I saw you were doing an article on implementing 3.8.9. I don't know how much it'll help, but I have one for 3.8.7 on Ubuntu 10.04. It's built for upgrading from 3.6.5 to 3.8.7, but since you have to do a complete install, it might help.
