Do yourself a big favor: ignore this entire page. It contains incredibly bad advice. Perl's taint mode is an excellent and easy security tool for your toolbox. If your application "fails when least expected" that's because it's found a security hole that you didn't know about. This tutortial basically says that you can have a "smooth RT experience" by ignoring security. That will be true until someone hacks your system because you decided not to use the tools available to you.
